Smoking For Jesus preparing for 6-on-6 play in June
The Smoking For Jesus Ministry School football team’s 6-on-6 squad is preparing for the first of three opportunities to face other competition.
First up is Ball County Angels, a team from Temple, traveling to play the Eagles at their home venue on the Smoking For Jesus campus, RR 2342 in Burnet. The two square off at at 5 p.m. Friday, June 10.
On Friday and Saturday, June 17-18, the Eagles will be one of 10 teams participating in a two-day tournament at San Marcos Academy. Smoking For Jesus finishes 6-on-6 by traveling to Temple to face the CenTex Chargers at 6 p.m. Friday, June 24.
Head coach Charles Frazier, Sr. noted 6-on-6 is six-man football’s version of 7-on-7 played by 11-man teams.
“We’re picking up games the whole month of June each Friday,” he said.
Another change is that unlike 7-on-7 that emphasizes passing, catching and the secondary, Frazier wanted to do things against live competition that would challenge his players that looked more like a real six-man contest.
“I want game-like scenarios,” he said.
The Eagles, who won back-to-back state championships as members of the Texas Christian Athletic League in 2020 and 2021, started strength-and-conditioning sessions June 1 with a morning session at 6 a.m. and an afternoon session at 3 p.m. Both are two hours.
Smoking For Jesus will begin playing in the Texas Association of Independent Athletic Organizations during the 2022-23 school year.
Equipment will be handed out July 1 for practices that start July 6. The only equipment players will don will be helmets from July 6-15. Practices with helmets and should pads, also known as shells, are July 18-29. Full-padded practices will begin Aug. 1.
